This past Monday as part of the Scott County Reads Together event, Christina Johansson of the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center spoke at the Main Street Library in Davenport.  Johansson’s lecture complements this year’s Scott County Reads Together selection, Man Killed by Pheasant: And Other Kinships, by John Price.  In his memoir, Price describes his Swedish family and how they have impacted his life. The lecture is an ancillary event leading up to Price’s residency happening April 12 -15, 2010.  Be sure to listen to what Mrs. Johansson has to say about Swedish immigration to the Quad Cities in the video below.   For more information on any of the Scott County Reads Together events, be sure to contact one of the libraries in Scott County.

The video is broken into six sections in order to accomodate the rules and regulations of YouTube.  The first video is shown, just click on the link to view the next five sections.

This month’s Senior Day program is on Thursday, January 28 at 1:30 PM.  The topic this month is staying active in the retirement years.  Dan Saskowski, manager of the Cath Lab and Cardiac Treatment Unit at Terrace Park, will discuss and demonstrate ways to keep fit and healthy.  Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes if you wish to participate in demonstrations.  Refreshments will be provided after the program.

Humanities Iowa

Libraries Together, a group comprised of the four public libraries in Scott County, Iowa, has received a grant award of $3,000 from Humanities Iowa, a state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, in support of the “Scott County Reads Together” initiative happening April 2010.

The grant money will cover a four-day residency of Iowa author, John T. Price. Between April 12 and April 15, look for exciting events featuring the author of Man Killed by Pheasant: And Other Kinships. This memoir will appeal to anyone who is interested in the environment, has ever lived in the Midwest, or has ever been attacked by a pheasant. :)  More information about this residency will be coming soon.
